Get ready to meet your new treasure hunter: Mark Wahlberg has confirmed while speaking to MTV’s Multiplayer Blog he will be slipping into the half-tucked shirt and always-raised eyebrow of Uncharted’s Nathan Drake. The film is currently planned to be directed by David O. Russell, who also directed Three Kings, so it’s not a huge surprise that the two are working together again. There’s also some word of Russell writing parts for Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro into the script, with DeNiro appearing as Drake’s father.
This is sounding like a very New England-centric version of Uncharted. As a big fan of the Uncharted games, and especially Nathan Drake, I can’t help but be nervous upon hearing that the guy who played Max Payne is now taking on the role of another favorite character. Maybe Russell couldn’t find Nathan Fillion’s number. The guy wanted to play Drake anyway and has the comedy chops to do it. While I haven’t seen every Mark Walhberg movie, I’m pretty sure his experience leans more toward Drake’s action sequences than the talking ones, and it would be a real crime to make an Uncharted movie that isn’t funny.
That said, if any game is ripe for a great translation to film, it’s unquestionably Uncharted, and Wahlberg is an established action star, so it should at least be an exciting film if not well-written.
