Halo Combat Evolved Evolving?

Rumors are flying that a new, old Halo is in development. In a title that would come ahead of the impending sequel to Halo 3, a remake of the original entry in the series is being murmured about as currently in development at Microsoft internal developer, 343 Industries. While no concrete details or announcement has been made, the impending 10th anniversary of the SciFi shooter lends at least a little validity or case for a remake using the Halo Reach engine. The move for a remake would also fit in with Microsoft’s intent to make the Halo series an annualized franchise which became an easier prospect with the departure of Bungie.

It seems like it is the season for new games, especially with the upcoming Spike Video Game Awards becoming a legitimate platform for unveiling games to the public for the first time. This rumor, if it turns out to be true begs the question; When is too soon for a remake? When I look at where console first person shooters have gone since the release of the original Halo it seems a bit crazy, yet when you really take an objective look at the evolution of the genre, Halo Combat Evolved (and I suppose a case could be made for Call of Duty 4) has represented the last big shift in core mechanics.

A fresh coat of paint is all well and good, but without some real compelling reason to pick up the remake (Remove or at least fix the library please) I think it may be an uphill sell to consumers come holiday 2011.
