In a statement that should come as no surprise to anyone that has followed the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Patrick Plourde, game director on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, mentioned while speaking with CVG that the franchise has ‘”limitless possibilities.” Speaking about the franchise in general, Plourde went on to talk about some of the design liberties that each installment is afforded:
“It’s super-liberating as a creator to be able to try wild stuff. There’s always the possibility of changing the time period. You can keep the same core but because you’ve changed the setting you can do things like have firearms, have Leonardo Da Vinci…Although the franchise is in a way stuck with the present – which is the final card that will always be there – other than that there are limitless possibilities with the brand and we understood what Assassin’s Creed was while making AC2 – we said ‘this is it’ … we captured a genie and put it in a bottle. For Brotherhood we’ve got that knowledge and starting to master the language of Assassin’s Creed. There are a lot of possibilities.“
Plourde went on to say that the first title in the series saw the team “walking in the dark” and although it’s development may have had heaps ofuncertainty accompanying it, they managed to stumble on something that has proven to be incredibly lucrative for Ubisoft. With the first title selling 8 million units and the sequel doing just as well, it is an obvious move for Ubisoft to “Tom Clancy” the series and push annual titles. Although it remains to be seen, all signs point to Brotherhood being a proper title in the series with a large amount of original content including a new multiplayer mode, which is a first for the series.
Brotherhood looks to continue the story of Assassin’s Creed II’s protagonist Ezio Auditore as series protagonist Desmond Miles continues to explore his genetic memories through the Animus. Brotherhood is slated for release on November 16th in North America and November 19th in Europe for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
