New Vegas is the second Fallout game since the series’ triumphant return in 2008. Bethesda brought the series back after a 10 year hiatus with Fallout 3, a game that has become one of the most successful RPGs of this generation. Not only was the game packed with more content than you could ever want, but it has been supported by one of the best DLC programs in gaming.
Even thought it rests in the hands of a different developer, there is still plenty to be excited about for New Vegas. Many employees of Obsidian worked for Black Isle Studios, the developer behind the first two Fallout games. The setting of New Vegas is also a return to the series’ roots. The Mojave Wasteland will feature classic factions such as the New California Republic that were not present in the DC area.
The reputation system from the first two games will also be making a return in New Vegas. Your reputation with a given faction will influence how NPCs interact with you, determine dialogue options and will give meaning to your actions in the world. Fallout 3′s Karma system will also return and will represent your overall standing in the world, although reputation will have more of an impact determining NPCs reactions to you.
Obsidian also took a few pages from Fallout 3’s active modding community and added a hardcore mode. As if surviving the apocalyptic wastelands wasn’t hard enough, this mode will force players to eat, drink and sleep as well as add weight to ammunition. Hardcore mode is independent of your difficulty setting, so gamers of any skill level can try it out. A weapon modification system was also implemented as a direct result of Fallout 3’s modding community, allowing you to increase the magazine size or add a scope to your favorite weapon.
The biggest concern you might have with New Vegas is whether or not you’ll be finished with it before the huge flood of games that will hit early next year. There is plenty of fun to be had in the wasteland for RPG and shooter fans alike.
