New multiplayer details emerge for TRON: Evolution

In 1982, my young mind was blown at the mere sight of the movie TRON. This iconic movie stood out to me as one of the coolest and interesting stories I’d ever seen up to that point in my life. Since then I’d always wondered what a movie like Tron would be like if it were given the glitz and glamor that can be achieved in movies of today. Anyone who has had the slightest interest in movies this summer has to have seen that the trailers for TRON: Legacy have ensured my daydreams just may come to light by revisiting Flynn’s Arcade. On another front however, the good folks at Disney have begun feeding us tidbits of information pertaining to their next interpretation of one of my childhood’s fondest memories in the game entitled TRON: Evolution.

TRON: Evolution will feature a 10-player online competitive multiplayer environment where gamers will assume the role of their programs and battle it out on game grids based on the franchise. The multiplayer experience will be free-roaming and allow for climbing into vehicles such as Tanks or Light Cycles or battling it out one on one with disc combat. Four multiplayer maps will be available in the game with two free DLC maps available through a unique code on the inset of the game package upon purchase. Disney has also confirmed that more maps and game content will be available for purchase in the future in the form of DLC. The multiplayer experience can be tailored to have all human players or join forces to either battle against the enemy AI or intermingle human and AI combatants into one large digital battlefield.

The game will feature persistent character progression where players can level up their character in either single-player mode or multiplayer and use that character in any of those two modes as they choose. Achievements gained in single player mode can be carried over into the multiplayer arena and vice versa.

Two of the vehicles mentioned are Light Cycles and Tanks. Light Cycles have a tiered system in which players can select among three different cycles as they progress through the game. Each cycle has different handling characteristics and features unique to their build. In two of the maps, players can freely transform into their respective Light Cycle to move fast and furious around the game environment. True to form, the Light Cycles are very fast and leave the light trail behind them for trapping opponents, causing them to crash and “derezz”. Certain Light Cycles will allow players to throw their discs from them and each cycle has been upgraded from the 1982 counterpart to allow both right angle turning as well as arc turning. Tanks are also available on two maps and are available to the first player to access them. They are very strong, but also very slow allowing the faster foot bound players opportunity to destroy the tanks without having immense unbalancing issues.

Four game modes will grace each map in hopes that the players will not grow bored. Disintegration will pit players against each other in a classic deathmatch style free-for-all play. Team Disintegration is a fancy name for Team Deathmatch. Bit Runner is you classic Capture the Flag routine in which a bit is placed on the map to be acquired and teams battle it out to grab it and reach their base with the bit intact. Finally Power Monger allows teams to capture waypoints on the map and link energy nodes together to gain points. Team with the most energy nodes at the end wins.
