It looks like the fine people over at Blizzard have given the date that they’ll be blowing up Azeroth. Today, Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced that the newest expansion Cataclysm will be released on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th. Whether there’s any collation between the blowing up of US Naval Forces and the outright decimation of the old world Azeroth, remains to be seen.
World of Warcraft’s 11 million fans will be able to get their hungry hands on either via DVD or digital download on the 7th for an entry price of $39.99. There will also be an exclusive Collector’s Edition selling only at retail outlets for the price of $79.99.
“Cataclysm includes the best content we’ve ever created for World of Warcraft. It’s not just an expansion, but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned leveling experience for those just starting out,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With the help of our beta testers, we’re putting on the final polish, and we look forward to welcoming gamers around the world to enjoy it in just a couple of months.”
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, allow me to fill you in on what Cataclysm is doing to the Warcraft world. The look, feel and playability of Azeroth is going away thanks to the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new quests and experiences. Two new races, the Worgen and Goblins will be playable on Alliance and Horde respectively. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they’ll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.
