Fallout: New Vegas Patched on Consoles

It’s no secret that Fallout: New Vegas launched with, shall we say, a couple of flaws. Gamers reported experiences ranging from characters with Exorcist-style spinning heads to the protagonist inexplicably sprouting extra arms. Developer Obsidian have the dubious honour of being known for shipping “rough diamonds” – games which are excellent, but which often suffer mild-to-crippling flaws at various points. Fallout: New Vegas is, sadly, no exception.

Hence, the patch. PC owners have been enjoying this patch featuring “over 200″ fixes for a little while now, but Bethesda announced on its forum that the patch is now also live for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners. Most of the fixes are related to quest and scripting issues.

Unfortunately, some gamers are still reporting issues with the game even post-fix, with bugs including complete game freezes. It looks like there’s still work for Obsidian to do on getting the game working as it should.

In the meantime, though, despite the bug-ridden chaos in the Mojave Wasteland, the fact that people are patiently persevering with the game is testament to its quality. To many fans of the series, New Vegas represents the best Fallout yet, incorporating the lessons learned from Fallout 3 into a setting which many feel is truer to the game’s look, feel and extensive lore.

While no-0ne likes continually waiting for patches to fix problems that shouldn’t really have been in there in the first place, at least Obsidian are actually making the effort to fix said problems. With each new patch, the experience will be closer to what was (presumably) originally intended for the game. And perhaps there might be a few enhancements incorporated along the way, too.

War. War never changes. Until the next patch. Then war gets better.
