Loyalty Has Its Rewards

In a move that’s bound to make both longtime fanboys of and recent converts to the Playstation 3 platform, Sony has announced a new Rewards program named, cleverly enough, PlayStation Rewards.

“PlayStation’s most important asset is its loyal fans and PlayStation Rewards gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation for their amazing passion and desire to continually evolve the gaming world,” said PlayStation Network senior director Susan Panico in a press release reported originally by the MTV Multiplayer Blog. “We can’t thank our fans enough for the feedback they have given us over the years and look forward to even more dialog to help us evolve PlayStation Rewards to make it the best possible loyalty program it can be.”

PlayStation Plus members will be among the first to be invited to the program, with non Plus members getting access in Spring 2011. Levels of membership will be based on purchasing habits (of course) and other activities on the PlayStation Network. There will be exclusive avatars, themes, and contests for things like a trip to CES Las Vegas, so be sure to get working on increasing your PSN activity in the months to come.

We’re ready to give Sony the benefit of the doubt here, as their PlayStation Plus program has turned out to be fairly decent. We hope this Rewards program isn’t only  not-so-cleverly disguised market research or ineffective marketing strategy, but rather does help Sony capitalize on the fandom that already exists, perhaps enticing more folks into the PlayStation fold – perhaps for the PS4?
