In a somewhat surprising move Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has copped to the fact that Nintendo’s track record of support among third party publishers has been pretty abysmal. “It is true that the third party software sales ratio on Nintendo platforms are comparatively smaller in Japan,” he said. “Wii’s third party software ratio is especially low.”
While Iwata didn’t dive into specific details as to why games from other publishers tend to be unsuccessful on Nintendo platforms, he promised that the rules would change when the 3DS launches.
“We need to decrease the concern that only Nintendo software can sell well on Nintendo platforms and third party software cannot sell in the same volume. We will not make a trend similar to the one found for Wii in Japan now,” he promised. “we feel a need to have closer ties with our third party developers from the beginning.
“The big expectations they hold make me humble. Together with the third party software people, we aim to expand the sales of Nintendo 3DS, and we will never stop our efforts to expand the gaming population.”
In related news, Iwata also confirmed that the high price tag of the 3DS has a lot to do with fan excitement after E3. Basically, Nintendo looked at how jazzed everyone got after they showed the product and decided they could charge whatever they wanted for the handheld and people would pay it. Unfortunately, they’re totally right. So let this be a lesson to all of us, next time a company announces a new device let’s all just play it cool ok? A shrug of the shoulders and simple “meh” could bring the price of the PS4 down at least $100.
