In a move sure to set your sneakers on fire and inspire you to start dunking basketballs from half-court, EA has announced that the new NBA Jam reboot will appear on the PS3 and Xbox 360 this holiday season. The news was officially confirmed recently on EA’s official blog, so we no longer have to wonder if and when the HD versions will arrive.
“NBA JAM will launch on the Wii, as scheduled, on October 5. NBA JAM won recognition this summer as the best sports game at E3 and it’s a blast to play. In addition to the Wii version, we’re going to ship NBA JAM as a standalone product on the Xbox360 and PS3 in time for the holidays. Watch for more news soon on the exact timing of that release.”
It’s long been rumored that the game wouldn’t remain a Wii exclusive, but it’s nice to finally have confirmation. Though we got word last month that a stripped-down version of NBA Jam would be bundled with NBA Elite, we’re happy to hear that the full version of the game will be available to owners of HD consoles.
Unfortunately, this happy turn of events was couched inside some bad news, as EA has also announced they will be delaying the launch of NBA Elite, which is their attempt at reviving the flagging NBA Live franchise. The company is pushing the game back three weeks, meaning rival NBA 2K11 will have a big head start in sales. Rebounding from this hit will be doubly difficult this year, as 2K not only typically releases the superior basketball franchise, but they also have an exclusive deal in place with Michael Jordan, making their game even more appealing than usual. EA basically chalked up the delay to needing more time to polish their game, so we’ll see if the extra time spent ends up creating something worth waiting for or a mere Johnny-come-lately.
But let’s not focus too much on the bad news, the good news is that the full edition of NBA Jam is now confirmed for PS3 and Xbox 360. Now you can start making plans to join up with friends online and come up with your own ridiculous catchphrases! Boomshakalaka!
