Release of the Week: Mafia II (360, PS3, PC)

While Grand Theft Auto may be the biggest name in crime games, you don’t get more gangster then the mob. Mafia first debuted way back in 2002, and it is time for a sequel. Mafia 2 tells the story or Vito Scaletta, an Italian immigrant and US soldier on leave after getting wounded in World War 2. It seems that Vito’s family is in deep with some loan sharks. Time to get his hands on some money and begin a life of crime.

Mafia II is probably what you’ve come to expect from crime games. You take various missions that lead you from low level grunt to high profile Mafia boss. These missions contain lots of shooting and driving in an open world. The biggest thing that sets Mafia II apart is its atmosphere. 2K Czech has put a lot of work into the 1940s/1950s setting. They even struck a deal with Playboy to get some authentic magazines from the time and add some sexual themes to a time characterized by suits and housewives.

2K isn’t reinventing the wheel here, but if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it. Mafia II is visually impressive ride set in a time usually reserved for trips to Normandy. After a long dry spell, this is the perfect game to get you back in the swing of things before the Holiday rush. Its time to get made.
