It’s that time of year again. Brett Favre has said that he might retire yet again, sports nerds everywhere are studying for their fantasy football leagues, and another Madden game is hitting store shelves everywhere. If you aren’t an annual Madden gamer, you still might care this year.
Every year EA focuses on some aspect of its storied franchise and attempts to make it better than ever. Last year was tackling which was improved with mixed results. This year they are overhauling the play calling system in order to make the game more accessible to newer players. When players activate the new gameflow system, the coach takes over the play calling. Before each snap the coach will explain the play to you and what you can expect from it. You can rate the plays that you like so that they will get called more often.
Blocking has also improved, but some things are unchanged from last year. Franchise (online and offline) and Superstar modes are the same as last year. Even so this is a good year to jump into Madden if you have been away for a while. If you have any interest in online play, be sure to buy the game new. Playing online requires the new EA Online passes. These come free with a new copy of the game, but those who rent or buy used will need to buy the pass for $10 to play online.
