Sony has announced that it will begin selling a few different versions of the new PlayStation 3 Slim models, beginning with a color change dubbed “Classic White”. Currently only known to be on sale in Japan, Sony will begin selling the new console with a 160Gb hard drive but promises to have larger capacities in the near future.
In other news of all things PS3, Sony has also announced that they are releasing the price restraint from the current 120Gb Slim models and thereby allowing retailers to sell the PS3 Slim console at whatever price they choose. Who knows whether this groundbreaking decision will spur on competition between retailers to offer the best prices on the console or fuel greed by allowing them to raise the price closer to the higher capacity console siblings.
Finally, rounding out the big Sony shake-up is the announcement that they are also now offering the PS3 slim in a 320Gb capacity, but only offering this SKU in the original black color. These consoles are set to go on sale July 29th and start at the equivelant price of $340 for the smaller capacity hard drive and upwards of $400 for the larger.
It appears that the recent color change from white to black by competitor Nintendo may be at play here with Sony’s recent color fascination. In addition, the white PS2 slim that came onto the market near the end of the life cycle seemed to sell fairly well considering the market penetration of PS2 consoles was already so high. The free pricing structure of the current generation PS3 Slims is a bold move by Sony and one that gamers will have to watch with caution as it could have a negative overall effect if retailers decide to become greedy.
