Release of the Week: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty(PC, MAC)

This is a serious case of Christmas in July. Whenever Blizzard releases a game global productivity takes a nose dive. StarCraft redefined the RTS genre and took the world by storm. If you think Modern Warfare is big in the states, then you should see how serious StarCraft is taken in Korea. Fun fact: StarCraft didn’t even have a Korean version at launch. Yet as big as StarCraft is, the series has been dormant for over a decade. That is, until this week.

Its no secret that Blizzard likes to take their sweet time making games. They spent a lot of time working on StarCraft: Ghost before they decided that it didn’t live up to their own standards and decided to scrap the project. They’ve also been busy taking over the MMO genre and ensuring a constant stream of money flows into their coffers. Now it looks like Blizzard has harvested enough minerals and StarCraft 2 is upon us.

Okay, maybe they harvested too many minerals. Blizzard got a little carried away and StarCraft 2 was made a little too big. StarCraft 2 is now a trilogy. Instead of cramming all three races into a single game, Blizzard has gone the Dawn of War route and will be releasing a whole game for each army. First up is Wings of Liberty which will follow Jim Raynor and the Terran.

Don’t worry though, all three races are playable in Multiplayer, which is supported by Blizzards Battle.Net revamp. This includes a matchmaking system, so after a few matches the system will stop paring you against players with years of experience. The map editor and market place will inevitably spawn entire genres of games, so get in on the ground floor now.

If you buy one game this summer, this should be it. Let your consoles gather dust, because StarCraft 2 is back! Seriously… If StarCraft 2 doesn’t outsell Modern Warfare 2 worldwide, I’m going to be very disappointed in you Internet.
