Release of the Week: Limbo (XBLA)

While giant developers are hard at work over the summer, attempting to churn out their AAA games in time for the holiday release schedule, the smaller indie games get a chance to come out and play. Limbo hits the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace this week as the first game in Microsoft’s “Summer of Arcade”. Buying either three or all five of the Summer of arcade titles and you will actually receive some of your Microsoft Points back!

Limbo is a great way to kick things off. You play the silhouette of a small boy with glowing eyes, in a dark 2D side scrolling adventure to find your sister. The art style is dark and foreboding, meaning that finding your sister will be an unnerving journey. You will see the boy’s silhouette come to many a gruesome end as the black and white world leaves perhaps too much to the imagination.

Gameplay relies on a tried and true formula. Other then moving, you need only worry about jumping and grabbing onto objects in the environment. Solving puzzles will be key as you find out just what objects will help move you forward, as you are engulfed in the atmosphere of Limbo.

Make no mistake that Limbo is a very dark game. It looks like a lot of fun, but maybe not a game to play while enjoying a fine summer evening. Wait for one of those crappy summer evenings instead. If instead you want to spend an evening with friends, Valve announced the four player co-op game Alien Swarm last week. It will be available for free by the time this article gets posted. I gotta admit, I didn’t expect that one…
