Release of the Week: Death Spank (XBLA, PSN)

There are three fairly big games hitting store shelves this week: NCAA Football 11, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, and Disciples III: Renaissance. Each of these games has their own following. If you are are going to buy one of these games, then you probably already know it. Therefore, I will ignore these three and pick a game most people haven’t heard of.

DeathSpank is a downloadable title that will appear on XBLA and PSN later this week. Essentially it is a Diablo-style hack and slash with the sense of humor of the Monkey Island series. You take control of DeathSpank, the hero who attacks first and… well, never bothers asking questions later. He and his sidekick wizard Sparkles are on a quest to find a powerful artifact known as The Artifact! Along the way you will find lots of stuff that you can use to kill and break other stuff! Hurray stuff!

You can map weapons that you pick up to any face button on the controller. Likewise you can map potions to your directional pad buttons. This allows you to kill things just the way you prefer! Your couch based friends can pick up a second controller and play as Sparkles, DeathSpank’s wizard friend. Sparkles has his own abilities and can help out using the range attacks from his wand. Sparkles’ abilities includes a flamethrower, healing, and an explosive mini-me.

DeathSpank is the perfect cure for the summer blues. With a good 15 hours of gameplay for about $15, the price is right for some fun with a friend. The quirky story, awesome hand-drawn art style and addictive button mashing are sure to lead to some fun nights on the couch. Just beware of the Enchanted Forest, where some of the most dangerous monsters in the world dwell… the Unicorns!
