The C64 is soooo indie.

So, taking inspiration from the great write up by freelance artist/journalist/awesometastic Becky Lang on the current state of indie aesthetics, I thought I’d do a bit of the same for video game covers, but more in reference to old video game boxart that could be indie album covers… so not really the same thing at all. But, you know, close enough.

Archipelagos – 1989 Atari ST

Captain Blood – 1988 C64

Street Sports: Basketball – 1987 C64

Station Fall – 1987 Apple II

Jabbertalky – 1982 DOS

Now I’d like to focus on one specific ‘Band’ – Accolade

Killed Until Dead – 1986 C64

Bubble Ghost – 1988 DOS

Rack ‘em – 1988 C64

Day Of The Viper – 1989 Amiga

European Challenge (Test Drive II Map Pack) – 1989 Amiga

Grand Prix Circuit – 1989 Amiga

Don’t Go Alone – 1989 DOS

So if you are unfamiliar with defunct video game developers, Accolade was an early developer that is probably best remembered for the Test Drive series and numerous other racing titles. Hilariously the name Accolade was chosen by founders Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead to come alphabetically before Activision (whom they had also help found) which was in turn named to come before Atari. The trend of ex-Activision employees starting companies alphabetically before Activision continued with the founding of Acclaim and Absolute Entertainment.
