Release of the Week: Splinter Cell: Conviction (360)

Its been a while since we have seen Sam Fisher, but Tom Clancy’s black-ops agent is back. Four years have passed since Double Agent hit the console and this time, Sam is ready and willing to get his hands dirty. For better or worse, Conviction will focus less on the stealth that it is so well known for and more on action. Will this bring a new audience to the franchise or just piss off die hard fans?

This new Sam Fisher is sick of waiting around in the shadows. Instead, Sam has all of the subtlety of Jack Bauer… and the interrogation skills to match. If asking someone nicely for the location of the evil hideout doesn’t work, then just smash their head against a piano. Nothing like a little torture to loosen the tongue of an evil henchmen. Another change to the combat is the ability to tag what enemies you want to kill before charging into a room. This might feel too “Press X to win”, but it does allow for some unique tactical combat.

Despite the move towards action, this is still a stealth game. You won’t be able to run in guns a blazing and expect to come out on top, which should prevent Conviction from becoming another run of the mill action game. While less time will be spent lurking under the cover of night, more attention will need to be placed on the environment. Splinter Cell has changed, but its still Splinter Cell.

You can expect to Conviction to be a solid stealth game if you are a fan of the genre. If you have stayed away from the series in the past, then the changes might be right up your ally. Especially of you enjoy simulated torture…
