Release of the Week: Neir (360, PS3)

There are several notable games that hit store shelves this week. For one, Super Street Fighter IV includes an expanded roster and new online modes. This is the perfect game for button mashers everywhere and is a must buy for fans of the fighting genre. Dead to Rights: Retribution is about a man and his dog. This third person shooter/brawler will feature a lot of canine based killing that hasn’t really been seen before in a video game.

Both of these games are worth noting, but my pick this week is NEIR. What you are getting is an action game in the same vein as Bayonetta and God of War 3. I mention these two hits because Neir looks to draw from their success. It promises large scale boss fights like God of War and the bizarre Japanese-style antics of Bayonetta.

Neir’s story will probably be its biggest draw. The main character is a father who will do anything to save his daughter, who has contracted the Black Scrawl. Part of “anything” involves fighting off hordes of evil shades, consulting a powerful floating/talking book, and tending a garden. Hey, a father has to pay the bills somehow. Besides, if Kratos has time for Rock Band then Neir should have time for Farmville.

Your first play through of Neir will take around 15 hours, but it doesn’t stop there. Your second and thirds play through will unveil more parts of the story. This may not entice some gamers to pick it up again, but it adds replay value beyond just bumping up the difficulty or going for achievements. This looks to be a good game for fans genre and might be the first such game this year to have a story you will actually care about.
