It looks like we are finally hitting a slow down in the release schedule. If you stroll into your local game store this week, then you won’t see a lot of enticing new games. All you are really going to find tomorrow is a game based on the Prison Break TV show, an obscure JRPG on the Wii and another perverted Dead or Alive game. Nothing real notable. We haven’t seen a release week this thin since Modern Warfare 2 scared everything out of last November.
That is exactly what seems to be happening again this week. The first Modern Warfare 2 map pack hits the Xbox Live Marketplace on Tuesday and the store shelves are a proverbial ghost town. The so called “Stimulus Package”, meant originally as an internal joke within Infinity War, will be available for a hefty 1,200 Microsoft “Spacebucks.” That’s $15 in real people money, a full $5 more then the World at War map packs released last year. It looks like Activision wants to stimulate their own coffers, rather then cash strapped gamers.
Much like other notable DLC packs as of late, the map pack will start off exclusive to the Xbox 360. It will contain three new maps as well as two remakes from the original Modern Warfare. Despite its high price point, you can expect that a large chunk of those still playing will fork over the cash. Personally the high price point will be keeping me away. Of course, the recent firing of Infinity Ward’s co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella are going to have me a little suspicious of anything Call of Duty for a while.
It isn’t that surprising, but there are online petitions urging Activision to cut the price. You can expect these petitions to go completely unnoticed. If you don’t think that five maps are worth a quarter of the cost of the game, then don’t buy it. If its a price you are willing to pay to extend the game, then go for it. The only vote Activision cares about is the vote from your wallet.
