Hmm, so it seems when female gamers take one step forward a HUGE brick wall is thrown in front of us and we get pushed fifty steps back. This week a lot of talk has been focused on a website called GameCrush. In my very personal opinion it’s the equivalent of Craigslist’s “Casual Encounters.” Granted, I haven’t been able to actually go to this website because the servers are currently overrun and they are still in the beta process. I am so horrified by the thought of this at the moment that I think it deserves some thought, time and discussion.
So, what does GameCrush offer? You can pay to play with a woman (or man- *cough*) in either casual games or console games. They are starting out on their own servers and over Xbox LIVE, and will be continuing on to Playstation and World of Warcraft. What will this cost you? $6.60 USD for a ten minute play session. Here’s where it get’s sticky. You can pick to have the session be either “flirty” or “dirty.” Really? My mind is just totally blown by this concept. I can’t imagine that it’s within Xbox LIVE’s code of conduct and even if it were, that it would be legal in any way, shape or form.
If I had to guess- the woman that would be playing with you has no real interest in games. Sitting on a webcam playing checkers while talking dirty is the equivalent of calling 1-900-Mix-A-Lot. Guys, you need to kick them nasty thoughts. Seriously.
Here is a thought people: you don’t have to pay to play with girls. That’s right, we are everywhere. We are free. Some of us are single and looking. We play games for the love of it, not to pretend that we like you so you will keep paying us. I know people that have met over LIVE and are married now. People move across the country to be with someone they met online. It does happen, just don’t be sitting there expecting it to (some girls aren’t interested, are already in a relationship and/or married) and especially not with the girls you meet on GameCrush.
Although it’s gradually become a social network as well as gaming platform, Xbox LIVE is not a dating service. And this is where GameCrush missed the mark. With LIVE becoming increasingly silent due to the “Party Chat” feature, why didn’t they set up something similar to E-Harmony, but for gamers? I’ll tell you why: sex sells. What guy wouldn’t want a sexy bombshell telling them, “mmmm, nice headshot baby.” Hell, I love it when I get complimented on my skills too but I would never pay someone to say it to me.
And I understand a guy or girl could just as easily go to a strip club where they know that the stripper has no intention of going home with them. Same concept; I get it. I really just wish they had left the gaming part out of it. Why? It’s hard enough being taken seriously as a female gamer. We are already treated by some like we are there on LIVE for their amusement. Will this help that? Will it alleviate the pressure of those guys and give them an outlet and leave us alone? I don’t think so. If nothing else we will more than likely get more harassment on why we aren’t working for GameCrush. I’m really thankful that I’ve built my friends list with my brother who supports my gaming 100 percent and a great group of guys who are not only respectful to women, they watch out for us too.
Now, would I want to get paid $30.00 an hour to play games? Hells yeah. Do I want to do it while feeling like a whore? No way.
[editor's note: we did not post a picture of a "hawt" gamer woman in this post. We did this as a considered and conscious act of refusing to honor the entire idea of "gamer chicks," which seems to be so prevalent that most sites don't hesitate at using it even when denigrating it.]
