Release of the Week: Star Trek Online (PC)

When it comes to video games, Star Wars has always had the upper hand on Trekkies. Star Wars fans have played adventure games, role playing epics, shooters, real time strategies and even space combat simulators. To this day, there have not been very many exciting Star Trek games. That is, until this week.

Tuesday sees the release of the much anticipated Star Trek Online. This MMO will let players take command of their own ships while engaging enemies either in epic space battles or when you send your team to the surface of a planet. Set 30 years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis, the Khitomer Accords have been broken and the Federation is once again at war with the Klingons.

If you don’t understand or care about that last sentence, then you probably won’t get the most out of Star Trek Online. The game is deep and full of Star Trek lore, but if you are just in it for the gameplay, then Star Trek Online is nothing special. Star Trek doesn’t do much new and plays like a standard MMO. Ships and crew are categorized into the usual tank/damage/healer roles like most MMOs and the quests will seem standard to veterans of the genre.

Even so, the game looks pretty and will satisfy Trekkies who haven’t had many high quality games to play. As with all MMOs, expect bugs and balancing issues in the beginning, but enjoy battling the Borg. Your life as it has been, is over.
