The Last Story: Is it really the last?

Announced by a press release sent out by Nintendo, The Last Story has been confirmed as the latest game coming from Mistwalker Studios, the company founded by Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi. From the rather bare-bones teaser site, it is safe to say that this Wii RPG is coming to Japan sometime in 2010.

Mistwalker’s two efforts on the Xbox 360 (Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey) weren’t quite the masterpieces people had in mind when Sakaguchi announced he was leaving Square-Enix to form his own company, but they still showed promise. Although Wii sales are rather hard to predict, The Last Story has a decent chance of widespread success. Traditional turn based RPGs have become synonymous with the Nintendo DS, but the Wii hasn’t exactly built the same library of titles; When Super Paper Mario is about the only title I can think of off the top of my head, something has gone terribly wrong. With Nintendo publishing the game (at least in Japan), the game will also have their ad dollars behind it.

Also, as an almost completely unrelated aside, Attention RPG developers: Final Fantasy really isn’t that great of a name. It simply works because of the nature of the series, so stop trying to find names synonymous for both Final and Fantasy ie. Infinite Undiscovery, End of Eternity, Last Remnant. I don’t care if you created the aforementioned series Sakaguchi, please try and find more original names for your game. I personally think ‘Amnesia X Monsters’ or ‘Plucky Young Hero’ would be great titles for a JRPG.
