Release of the Week: Bayonetta (360, PS3)

I hope you got lots of gift cards over the holiday’s, because 2010 is kicking off with a bang! January is full of big releases, and this week is no exception. When you go pick up your copy of Bayonetta this week, make sure to grab a couple of energy drinks so you can keep up. This over the top action game is a great way to kick off the new year.

Bayonetta is fast pace action game that features a woman with guns strapped to her hands and feet, using furious combo attacks to dispatch monsters that could only come from the minds of the Japanese. The weapons strapped to her thigh are not her only weapons, mind you. Her hair has the power to summon dragons for assistance and is also used to trap demons. It makes you wonder what brand of shampoo she uses.

While at first it may not seem like it, the game is about more then just button mashing and quick time events. The visuals are gorgeous (if a bit bizarre) and the story should keep you somewhat interested in your overall goal. Bayonetta is a witch who, much like the player, has no idea who she is or what she is attempting to do. She has a variety of abilities such as walking on walls when the moon is up and slowing down time in the midst of combat. Eventually, she learns that she can even trap the evil demon monsters by using her hair in some spectacular quick time events.

If you are like me, you may worried about remembering combos in the heat of battle during such a chaotic game. To help this, the loading screens give you a chance to practice. If you still can’t remember, button mashing will probably result in a fair amount of combos simply because so many exist within the game.

If you like button mashing or were a fan of the Devil May Cry series, Bayonetta is for you! Most gamers should enjoy it, but stick to the 360 version. Early reports say that the PS3 version developed some problems when it was ported from the 360. Later updates may help address them, but if you have a choice, I suggest grabbing the 360 version just to be safe.
