Mass Effect 2 Launch Soured by Activation Code Issues [Update]

[Update]: Though the folks at EA and BioWare have thus far remained silent, users on the BioWare message boards are reporting calling or chatting with EA support as a solution. According to numerous users, an EA representative will link your EA account and your BioWare account. At that point, it is just a matter of having the email address of those accounts the same as the one you use for your Xbox Live. I have not yet been able to verify this, as the hold time for EA support is almost an hour, but I will update you all if I am able to get thorough.

Nationwide, late-night gamers who waited in the freezing cold for their copies of Mass Effect 2 are arriving home to find their experience soured by poor instructions given by EA. Packaged with first-issue copies of the game is a code to unlock the in-game Cerberus Network, which provides access to bonus downloadable content for the game. The instructions on the insert say to enter the code on the website. If the user has done this before launching the game, in order to gain access to Cerberus right away, they soon find out, upon launching the game, that there is a spot in game to insert the code, and the code is now invalid.

So far, hundreds have been locked out of their access to the Cerberus download, and the BioWare.com message boards have been bombarded with people trying to fix the issue. At 3:28 AM a BioWare team member posted a supposed fix on the message boards, but many are still having issues. So far, the posted fix only helps those who have not yet registered their code. It seems that if the emails addresses you use for your EA Online account and your Xbox Live account are different, you may run into the issue at hand. Hopefully a solution is provided once the EA* big wigs wake up in the morning and realize that a huge portion of their customers are very angry. My suggested fix is for them to simply bite the bullet and release the Cerberus content for free. Sometimes a show of solidarity is more profitable than trying to actually turn a profit.

* For those who do not know, BioWare, the developer of the Mass Effect series, was recently acquired by Electronic Arts.
