Release of the Week: Rogue Warrior (PC, 360, PS3)

RogueWarriorRogue Warrior could easily slip by this holiday season. Whether or not this is a good thing has yet to be determined. There are some pretty big things working against it. First of all, there has already been a first person shooter that focuses on killing Russians this year. Competing against Modern Warfare 2 isn’t exactly a great business plan, as evidenced by numerous releases fleeing to the first quarter of 2010. Secondly, this game appeals to those who watched a lot of 80′s movies. Hell, the main character is voiced by Mickey Rourke. Appealing to older gamers isn’t a bad thing, but they only have so much time. Most of that is going towards the aforementioned Modern Warfare 2.

Setting aside the risks, lets talk about what Rogue Warrior brings to the table. First, it has been called a “Personality Focused” shooter. This helps showcase the main character, real life former Navy SEAL and author Richard “Dick” Marcinko. The story itself won’t be based on his life, just his personality. That means Rogue Warrior will try and make you care about the man behind the gun. It will also feature elements of a tactical shooter such as stealth kills that will be inspired by Marcinko’s experiences. Meshing together real life stealth and over the top action 80′s could make or break Rogue Warrior, depending on how it all comes together.

Let’s make it clear: this is no Modern Warfare, which is why this game could work. For those not into mindless action, this could be the shooter for you. However, I would wait a few days to make sure nothing horribly broken is reported, but this could be a solid game that flies a bit under the radar.
