Release of the Week: Champions Online (PC)

champions2352onlineeThe start of September means the start of the Holiday rush. Okay, maybe its a TAD early to declare that, but some big named titles are starting to make their way to store shelves. With most games getting out of the way of November’s mega-hit Modern Warfare 2, some developers are trying to get their big titles in early.

Section 8 looks pretty cool, and I am a fan of any game that includes jump troops falling straight into battle. Sadly, it is far too much of a Halo clone to stand much of a chance with a September launch. Guitar Hero 5 is also coming out this week, but with its lackluster online support it just doesn’t stand up to Rock Band 2. This is especially true with the upcoming Beatles Rock Band.

Therefore, my pick for Release of the Week is going to Champions Online. Champions is based on one of the oldest pen and paper games on the planet and is coming from the developer behind City of Heroes. Not being held back by property rights after a falling out with Marvel, the super hero creation system is going to be the highlight of the game. While it will be difficult for any MMO to cut into the World of Warcraft empire, the success of Superheroes in pop culture should help give it a boost. Another advantage is the fast-pace action that most MMOs lack.

As with most MMOs it will probably take a while to get all the kinks out of this highly anticipated game. You may not want to jump on board right away, but I recommend giving this game a good long look. There is nothing like being the top dog in a world full of superheroes.  Champions Online hits store shelves late this week.
