I have found that many modern games have become far too fancy. Each game attempts to be more graphically intense and overall more complicated then the last. In order to make an impact in the market place, immersion drives games away simplicity. Because of this, many gamers just relive the glory days by going back to their old games. If you have looked at PC games in a retail store at any point in the past decade then you have seen Diablo II sitting perched on the shelf, still holding a spot even though its graphics are ancient.
Some new game have come out using an old formula. Unfortunately this is usually limited to games on a cell phone, MP3 player or handheld console. After all, why would you make a game that is going to be blasted by the critics for having a tired, unimaginative formula?
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is an old style action role-playing game being released for the next generation systems. It was originally released on the PC late last year and is now attempting to make action role-playing work on the console. The PC version wasn’t particularly impressive, but it did use an established formula to produce a solid game.
I wouldn’t recommend jumping the gun and picking up Sacred 2 unless you are an action role-playing fanatic, and then you should probably stick to getting it on the PC anyway. What I do like about the game is that it doesn’t attempt to be overly complicated. Good old button mashing, gear collecting and looting. Not every game can be a winner and its nice that we have some games to turn to when Diablo II can no longer satisfy nostalgic impulses.
