Release of the Week: Patapon 2 (PSP)

getwallpaper1It isn’t quite time for the big summer games to begin rolling out, but this week’s Release of the Week is still very good. The Patapon series returns to the PSP with its second installment on Cinco de Mayo. The original was an incredibly addictive rhythm game that took the PSP by storm. Patapon combines rhythmic button mashing and controlling hordes of warriors into one aesthetic and acoustically pleasing package.

Patapon 2 builds on where its 2008 predecessor left off. At first glance it appears to be more of an expansion then a full new game. The interface looks exactly the same and the core rhythm mechanics are still there. What the sequel does do is bring an incredible amount of variety to the game as well as adding a fun multiplayer element. New mission and unit types will help make the game even more strategic in nature, an aspect not seen in many rhythm games.

The newest feature Patapon 2 includes are the new heroes . By finding various memories during your journeys you will be able to use these heroes to unleash powerful attacks on your foes. Additionally new units include flying and wizard Patapons. A new unit creation/leveling system is a welcome change from the original.

One important thing to note before you buy the game is that you will be needing an Internet connection. Purchasing the box at the store doesn’t actually include the game, but rather a booklet and a download code. If you can deal with this then Patapon 2 looks like a great game with a low price tag.
