World War II wasn’t all about storming beaches and large scale parachute drops. Spies and sabotage were a big part of the war effort as well. This week, Replay Studios brings us a game based on Violet Szabo, a real life spy, fighting for the allied forces. Velvet Assassin is a historic stealth game that has had a rough development cycle, but is finally hitting shelves tomorrow.
In a market saturated with WWII games, Velvet Assassin does a few things to stick out. First of all, there aren’t many stealth games that take place in this setting. This should slow things down a bit, so that you notice the painstaking amount of historical detail Replay Studios has attempted to pack into the game. Secondly, the main character certainly isn’t your generic foot soldier. Controlling the slim and attractive Violet Summers in a third person perspective is not something you expect from a WWII game.
Think of the game as a WWII version of Hitman, except Agent 47 has had a sex change. The atmosphere is extremely dark and grim, capturing the true horrors that occurred in WWII behind the front lines. Locations range from Paris to Warsaw, with missions that are so dark that success may not seem very fulfilling. Overall, the game is brutal and definitely not for kids. Perhaps the most daunting part is historic reality of it all.
Velvet Assassin hasn’t been the most anticipated game this year and it probably won’t be changing the face of the gaming industry. Still, this should be looked into by die hard WWII and stealth fans alike.

I'll be checking this one out – the Morphine Mode seems intriguing.
