A recent story in the Statesman showcased several mayoral candidates for Austin TX. The most appealing of which, Brewster McCracken, sees video games as a way to help pull the city through these tough economic times.
McCracken’s plan is appealing because it builds on Austin’s key features that include research and development, high tech industries, creative economy, emerging green energy industries and reputation as a city that values its local businesses and quirky style.
While focusing on Austin’s strengths, the inclusion of video game developers, in McCracken’s eyes, will draw a talented workforce for central Texas. It should also bring in many more independent musicians and game publishers.
Starting with a vision of independent film, independent music and 3-D animation leadership in digital media… We will need to recruit video game and music publishers and firms with expertise in digital media distribution to empower local creative artists.
Tech industries have continued to flourish in Austin and the inclusion of incentives to video game developers and publishers would be wonderful for the local economy. McCracken’s got our vote, too bad more politicians can’t think like him.
