Electronic Arts have brought in a whole new team to develop their latest in the long running Need For Speed series. Need for Speed: Shift is being developed by British developer Slightly Mad Studios (formerly Blimey! Games. Both receive official kudos from GrE for their awesome names) who previously played a part in the development of the award-winning GTR2.
The first thing that ran through my mind upon seeing this video? Huh… Second thing that ran through my mind? That’s a lot of crashes in the trailer for a game that’s meant to be about racing. Need For Speed looks like the surprisingly unventured result of mixing Project Gotham Racing’s amazing city environments and arcade-style gameplay with Race Driver G.R.I.D.’s general look and feel (in a sense, refined controls and car-handling which can appeal to all racing game fans). If the game does indeed end up like this, then we could be in for the CoD4 of racing games.
I reckon if the game feels as fast and mean as this trailer suggests, we may have the best and most groundbreaking title in the Need for Speed series since Most Wanted. This could redefine the series as a quality competitor within the competitive driving genre. Look forward to Need For Speed: Shift on every imaginable platform that has the capacity to play video-gamesĀ (PC, PS3, PSP & 360) this winter.
