Could OnLive Spell ‘The End’ for Consoles?

OnLive logoFor those of you who have missed the news about this new piece of tech, let’s have a quick rundown. OnLive is being hailed as the “New generation of gaming” and the world’s highest performance Games On Demand service. Founded by tech entrepreneur Steve Perlman, the project has been in development for the past seven years.

Set for a Winter 2009 release, OnLive will allow you to play the latest games via home broadband direct to your TV via the OnLive MicroConsole.  This will also work on your PC or Mac without any downloads or install time.

As awesome as this sounds, let’s get back to the initial question: Could OnLive Spell ‘The End’ for Consoles?

MicroConsole ans Controller

OnLive makes some pretty big claims: demo any game, no downloads, no high-end hardware, instant community, no lag, and the latest games running smooth when you want them. It is hard to believe that any piece of equipment is capable of all this, but in theory this really is a spectacular development. There is no question OnLive would be more eco-friendly, no longer requiring the production of discs, boxes or covers across multiple platforms.  This would also result in massive savings for every video game distributor, which could effectively lower the retail price of games for the customer.

This could also spell the end for broken street dates, various release dates for different countries and the “Fanboy” wars that go on between the consoles. All good you might think, but it could also destroy the high street video game retailers, resulting in massive job losses along with those who deal with game manufacture and distribution.

But enough from me, What do you guys think?, would you buy this? Lets hear your thoughts.
