Majesco Entertainment Company, publishers of cult classics Advent Rising and Psychonauts have announced a remake of the award-winning NES favorite, A Boy and His Blob (or as the original was called in Japan; ‘Fushigina Blobby: Blobania no Kiki’. Aren’t different people funny?) on the Nintendo Wii.
The original, which was released in the “Good Old Days” (read: before my time) came from the creative mind of David Crane (Magnum Opus: Pitfall, Magnum Shittus: Ghostbusters) offered a platforming experience based on manipulating the shape of your close friend, the snowman-esque Blobert by feeding him a variety of different flavored jelly beans in order to save the world of Blobolonia from an evil emperor (lets call him Blobulon for now) – for example, a licorice flavored bean would turn your little friend into a ladder, which can be used to access higher platforms. What licorice has to do with ladders we’ll never know, but we’re sure it contravenes all kinds of health and safety laws.
It is not yet clear whether this is a refreshed remake (similar in concept to Bionic Commando: Rearmed) or a full-on re-imagining, but we have to admit that we’re pretty excited at the idea of either, and knowing Majesco is at the helm only supports our enthusiasm. The game promises “groundbreaking hand drawn and painted animation technology” suggesting an expanded artistic direction, taking full advantage of the Wii’s current-gen technology. Perhaps the best thing that could result of this is an answer to the question that’s been on everybody’s lips… Where does this guy get all his Jelly Beans from? Did the first game forget to mention that the kid had just returned from an armed raid of the local Jelly Belly Bean factory? Or is he simply some kind of underground confectionary pimp? It looks like we won’t find out until later this year.
A Boy and his Blob should be waggling its way to your Wii later this year.
UPDATE:
Screens have been released since the posting of this article, and it looks like this WILL be an all new adventure for A Boy and His Blob. Check out the amazing new look here:
