THQ Reducing ‘Core’ Game Count

During a financial earnings call last night the head of THQ, Brian Farrell, (according to VG247) stated that they will be “putting fewer core gamer titles into full production” and will instead be focusing on improving the quality and marketing of their current catalogue.

“The idea is focus, focus, focus. But we will compete aggressively…when we launch.”

This news comes on the back of the announcement that THQ will be shedding roughly 24% of its entire workforce – around 600 employees – in a bid to cut costs after a 2008 fourth quarter loss of USD 191.8 million.  THQ’s total sales decreased 30% from 2007 to 2008, prompting Farrell to cite the current global economic situation, “Clearly, this is one of the most challenging holiday retail environments that I’ve experienced in my 18 years at THQ”.
