SEGA have today announced that they will be publishing a new addition to legendary arcade-tennis series. Due for release this May, Virtua Tennis 2009 will be making an appearance on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
At this point the full roster lists have yet to be released but Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Roddick from the men’s tour and Maria Sharopova, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic from the women’s pool have been confirmed. In addition Virtua Tennis 2009 has obtained the official Davis Cup license, allowing you to do battle with the pride of your country at stake.
Long term fans will be pleased to know that the ever-popular court mini-games will make a welcome return. Again, the full line-up of what these will entail are being kept secret but we can apparently expect to see the return of the more popular games of the past alongside more brand new ones – fruit, crocodiles and pirates are promised though.
Among the new additions to this years game are improved serving, volleying and net play mechanics combined with a brand new player ‘stumbling’ feature. World Tour Mode (read: career mode) will also be given a makeover to include over 800 clothing items and an integrated online ranking system on both the PS3 and 360.
“The return of Virtua Tennis promises to be a real treat for both fans of the series and sports game fans everywhere” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. “The tennis season is shaping up to be the most exciting in years, and with new players, courts, an Online Tour and extensive on-court updates – Virtua Tennis 2009 is sure to maintain its spot as the standard by which all tennis games are judged.”
