Vitals: The Wheelman

“We’re designing Wheelman to play like a Hollywood blockbuster,” said Vin Diesel, Wheelman star and executive producer, Tigon Studios. “Playing this game will be just like taking control of the greatest car chases from feature films, except this time you’re in the driver’s seat.”

Players will find themselves on the run with the U.S. mafia hot on their tail. Fleeing to Barcelona, a city with which you have dark ties to criminal gangs, players will be tasked with setting the factions against each other by any means possible. While starting a great war sounds like a complex task for one man, players will assume the role of Vin Diesel, who possesses superior skills behind the wheel and has physical prowess in hand to hand combat.

Midway promises that players will be able to execute “incredible slides, drifts and jumps without complex controls.” Allowing you to pull off stylish maneuvers and tricks by building up your “Focus”, which will trigger over the top “Hollywood-style” stunts. Driving and shooting in real time while the world around you slows to a crawl will be one of the main features used with the players “Focus”.

Barcelona is a densely populated city, packing streets with pedestrians and traffic that will react intelligently to your actions. Though these streets should provide many hours of entertainment solo, they will also be available through team-based online missions. Players will be able to hook up online and share their driving and shooting skills with the world. Though it sounds like all of your time will be spent behind the wheel, players will actually get a lot of flexibility with their missions, allowing them to jack more cars, trucks, motorcycles, you name it! Think GTA, with Hollywood action thrown in there for that extra bit of umph.

It’s no secret that games made after movies generally flop, however seeing Tigon’s track record (Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay), this one looks like it could steal the show. The over-the-top action may just be what this tried and true genre needs to spice things up, and coming this February, we’ll know for sure.
