Bomberman made his debut in 1983, giving gamers their first taste of this arcade-style, maze-based mayhem. Originally a story about a robot forced to work in a bomb factory who eventually tries to escape, Bomberman quickly evolved into one of the greatest multiplayer experiences around, still going strong after all these years.
Hudson Soft’s bomb-toting hero returns in Bomberman 2 for the Nintendo DS, with Konami at the wheel bringing gamers an all new make-over and wealth of new elements added to the gameplay. The ever familiar basis of laying bombs to eradicate patrolling foes remains intact, however this time Hudson Soft has expanded it across a more open format, creating a deeper title that maintains the addictive nature the series is famed for.
Changing up the gameplay a bit with more open areas should help contribute to the action, while players will be charged with completing set missions within a set time limit. Missions will include simple tasks such as destroying a set number of blocks within a short time frame, to escape from a level or even blowing up specific energy cores. While some of these missions will be undoubtedly trying to players skills, a wealth of power-ups will be available to collect. From multiple bombs, to speed-ups, to increased damage and more, Bomberman wont be ill equipped. However players will be tested with accuracy and the use of timed detonations against huge bosses.
Gamers will also be able to customize their bomberman or girl, changing the main hero’s appearance and capabilities as new items become available, giving players over 160,000 possible additions. With so many unlockables, replay value should be through the roof, making sure that players are constantly motivated to keep playing. Likewise, the series famed multiplayer has been enhanced, with up to eight players via Wireless service.
Bomberman 2 is set to detonate shelves February 13th and we’ll be keeping our eye on this one as it nears launch. Hopefully Konami can re-capture the fun and excitement of Bomberman in this Nintendo DS exclusive.
