I don't want to read this article in its entirety because I don't want the spoilers.. (just got the game) But I'm bringing all kinds of terror to the world of Fable 2. I'm pissed, some asshole killed my sister, then tried to kill me. I'm killing anything and anyone who stands in my way, or who looks at me wrong, or who gets pissed off cause I broke into their house to sleep on their bed cause I didn't own a house yet..

Anyways.. My point is.. This game is about revenge.. and I'm taking it. I don't feel any want to do good.. and the story was set up to support me wanting to be a bad ass with nothing to lose.

Don't get me wrong though.. I think there is a TON of emotion in this game.. but its filled with hate.. in the beginning it made me happy go lucky, then it tore that away from me.. now I'm angry, and the world of Fable will suffer because of it..

Great article Rob. I played through very differently than what I have seen reported here.

There were som simple rules to my play style.

I wanted revenge for my attempted murder.
NO ONE was to touch my dog. doing so would equal death.
Produce vendors were to be tricked into following me out of town and killed.
Other than my cross dressing, I treated the citizens very well. They had the same rent, or lower in the case of the gypsies. I tried not to steal from them.
I did have a rough patch when I made enough sacrifces to the temple of shadow, but I made up for it with purifying actions.
I did not choose money either in the end. I sacrificed my family for the good of the world.

When I returned they did not seem too grateful and quick to judge my clothing and hair style.

So now I am a menace, if they are not polite.

My main point with all this is, that Fable II was the first game to really allow me to role play what I wanted to do. It actually allows me to play in a grey area.

Thanks for this! I really believe that we are trying to push the threshold of Interactive Narrative, this was the reason I wanted to work in the games industry. And acknowledgments like this are what make it all worth it. I do vow to do whatever is in my reach to try to keep adding emotion and depth in games. I too believe that we don't have enough of this in games, and I do agree that we are on interactive narrative's infancy.

seems as though i played the game in a completely different way to you. i never stole everything from anyone - i'm a hero of good and the people of Albion love me, how could I steal from them after they gave me such a round of applause for my soct puppet skills?

along that same line i helped the prisoners in the spire at every oppurtunity, as well as disobeying the guards, because (again as a hero of good) i felt it right to put their immediate needs ahead of my long term goals.

anyway, this kind of convo is my fav feature in that it shows there are different ways to play the game and there are different things to take away from it - even if the effect on the story's ending is rather negliable. in my opinion the story you make for yourself is equally - if not more - important and involving then the main story anyway.
