VITALS: SuperCar Challenge

System 3, formed in 1981, is responsible for some of the greatest videogames of the past 27 years. With titles like The Last Ninja, MYTH: History In The Making, International Karate and Williams Pinball Classics, System 3 has spanned the consoles from Commodore 64 to the PlayStation 3. On 12/15/08, almost 30 years after formation, System 3 has announced that Eutechnyx will develop SuperCar Challenge for the PlayStation 3. Building on the Ferrari Challenge racing simulation engine, this high octane racer will boast both arcade and simulation thrills behind the wheel.

SuperCar Challenge (SCC) will include all the exotic dream cars any gamer could ask for such as the Aston Martin DB9, the Lamborghini Murcielago RGT, the McLaren F1, and many more. In all, there will be a total of 40 cars to select from, ensuring that every racer’s dream car makes the list. But what good is a list of phenomenal cars without a good road to lay down the rubber? SCC will have over 20 tracks that include the likes of Silverstone, Spa and Nurburgring, with more track announcements promised over the coming months.

Simulations are often brutal racers, leaving no room for error and giving players a rather steep learning curve. SCC is looking to fill the gap between hardcore gamer and casual with their assist mode. The ultimate aim is to graduate players through assists to full simulation handling, leaving smiles on even the worst Sunday driver. SCC will include an arcade mode that gives gamers the touch of power and rush that driving a supercar does without the worry of breaking at just the right time on corners and falling back to last place because you ran off course.

Hardcore gamers fear not! SCC’s main focus will be on simulation. In simulation mode drop your concentration for one second and it could mean you’re out of the race. The assists will still be available through simulation, but players will have the option to turn off all undesired help. You may want to keep some of that help active, though, as the AI has been completely rewritten. The brand new Dynamic AI setting allows the game to change the challenge you receive based on how well or badly your career is going. Then again, the true hardcore racers will just set the AI to Legendary and keep full sim on at all times, I’m sure.

SCC races will be playable by up to 16 players both through the PlayStation Network and LAN across multiple PlayStation 3 consoles. That’s right, this looks to be another solid PlayStation 3 exclusive racer. But not only will PlayStation 3 owners be getting an exclusive racer, they’ll also be getting an exclusive racing chair! System 3 has teamed up with Netherlands based driving seat solution company Playseats to promote SCC. The two companies will work hand in hand to create the definitive racing seat experience for SCC. The deal will involve various cross-promotion activities including race day events and exclusive SCC branded seats. These seats will be made available for purchase when the game launches in the spring of ’09.

“With the passion and racing heritage that’s going into SuperCar Challenge we wanted to work with a company that shares our goals and passion. Professional race driver Fernando Smit and his company Playseats can provide the perfect set-up for SuperCar Challenge, enabling gamers to enjoy the ultimate racing experience at a price that won’t break the bank,” said System 3 Brand Manager Chandra Nair.

As we approach the ’09 launch of SCC, we’ll keep you up to date with all of the changes and additions being made to this promising PlayStation 3 exclusive racer.
