The History of DC Comics & Mortal Kombat (Abridged)

1 Comment 16 November 2008 | Tags: , ,

DC Comics characters have coexisted in the same universe for many years. Actually established in the 1940 All Star Comics #3, where several superheroes founded the Justice Society of America (JSA). Following World War II the JSA disbanded due to paranoia from the Un-American Activities Committee. Soon after the Justice League was formed and have remained Earth’s saviors from evil.

Super villains have also formed their own groups in the DC Universe. Outcast personalities that had been rejected from the mainstream have often banded together to fight against the superheros. Creating such groups as the Secret Society of Super Villains. Usually these groups are quick to dissolve due to the fact that they are full of evil masterminds that don’t even trust each other.

Mortal Kombat, on the other hand, has evolved from the minds of Ed Boon and John Tobias. Quickly becoming a controversial piece due to the graphic violence that had yet to be seen in a fighting game. The growing media coverage had many gamers flocking to Mortal Monday to get there hands on the hottest title of 1992.

The world of Mortal Kombat goes back to the beginning of time. There existed only two types of beings: The Elder Gods and the One Being. One Being drew his power from the Elder Gods until they declared war to save themselves. Splitting the One Being into six pieces that eventually became realms. After many years passed, realms wished to combine and conquer one another. The Elder Gods decreed that upon defeating a realm’s top warriors in Mortal Kombat would allow them to conquer that realm. This is the only “legal” way for one realm to invade another and any violation of this is seen as treason against the Elder Gods.

The realm of Mortal Kombat has collided with that of the DC Universe. These two worlds must combine forces of both good and evil in order to survive. In the end only one realm will prevail and the other will be annihilated.

Each character on the roster will feature specific moves to take down their adversaries with personal style. From straightforward attacks to the extravagant fatalities that we’ve all come to know and love from Mortal Kombat games, each combatant will have their own fighting style and powers to exploit.

For the first time in MK history players will have the opportunity to face off while mid-air. Not only will there be your typical close quarters combat dubbed Klose Kombat, but there will also be Freefall Kombat. Freefall Kombat allows players to fight while falling from one arena to the next. The mechanics are sure to be interesting for these mid-air fights as projectiles fill the void between players. That’s not to say there wont be hand to hand combat while in the air, but special moves such as Superman’s laser vision should be extremely useful.

Players will also get to choose between the realm of Mortal Kombat or DC Universe. Depending on the side chosen a story will unfold bringing about the saving or demise of that realm. The unique storylines will weave the worlds and characters together hopefully providing an intense experience all the way through. With writing talent on board such as Jummy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (Countdown, Uncle Sam and The Freedom Fighters being some of their works) along with the veteran MK team members, it’s easy to see how this could be one of the greatest fighters ever made.

Below are all playable characters from each realm in MK vs. DC:
