LittleBigPlanet: Trouble in Paradise?

UPDATE: Sony & Media Molecule have just issued a statement regarding the banning of levels, with a typically upbeat overtone. In the interest of fair & balanced journalism, here it is.

There’s a growing problem in the LittleBigPlanet universe. As seen before with creative games, people can make all sorts of inappropriate things. But this isn’t the case in the LBP intranet. User created levels are being hammered out of existence. That’s right, Sony isn’t just banning levels, they’re deleting them right off your system.

In a game that is community driven and inspired by the creative mind, it seems hard to believe that any of the works created herein could be regulated based off inspiration. Now it seems players will spend hours creating a world based on one of their favorite things only to find their level deleted completely from their console. Ever see a re-creation of world 1-1 from Super Mario Brothers? Not exactly the same thing as Mario was, but charming none the less. BAN! Thinking that a title to a movie would fit the premise of your level, even though it has nothing to do with the movie? BAN! Seriously? Can you ban a level just because a player gave it a name that was already taken? This is getting out of hand.

This is a major hit to Sony in the console war. LBP was supposed to be a console seller because of the creativity that could be accomplished within. Media Molecule has given us a gem here. LBP is one of the most innovative games this industry has seen in years. Unless this problem can be worked out, Sony is going to lose LBP as a system seller. What’s the point in playing a game that revolves around creation, when you can’t create?

There is a possible solution, but at the moment it’s more headache than should be caused by any game. So if you’re interested in fighting the system and keeping your cherished levels then check out the possible solution posted at the Playstation Forum. All we can do now is hope for a brighter future on LittleBigPlanet.

On that note I’d like to leave you all with an example of a level that will be, or has already been, erased from existence. This is the kind of stuff new players will be missing out on.
