Wii Music’s Sales Fail To Impress in Japan

In only 2 days, Wii Music managed to shift 50,000 copies in Japan. While that sounds like a staggering number, it far underperformed early sales projections by Nintendo. Still, if you are an outsider looking in on the scenario, you would think that 50,000 copies would be enough to make the game an instant success. Surprisingly, when you compare the sales to those put up by other notable Nintendo Wii marque titles, the numbers begin to tell a far different story.

The top selling Wii games after only two days are as follows:

  1. 595,000 copies — Mario Kart Wii
  2. 500,000 copies — Super Smash Brothers Brawl
  3. 254,000 copies — Wii Fit
  4. 176,167 copies — Wii Sports (Sold seperatly from console in Japan)
  5. 175,297 copies — Wii Play
  6. 139,001 copies — Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  7. 130,000 copies — Super Mario Galaxy
  8. 63,954 copies — Warioland: Smooth Moves

With stellar sales numbers like this, I can start to understand why Nintendo would be so disappointed with Wii Music‘s performance (pun intended.) It will be interesting to see what the sales are stateside, when the NPD numbers become public at the end of the month. Until that point, are you planning on picking this bad boy up?
