Fanboy Heartbreak: Resident Evil 5 Not Possible on Wii?

Ever since Capcom’s announcement of Resident Evil 5 back in 2005, fans have been clamoring to get their hand on the game. While installments have been confirmed for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, there has been no word on whether the title is coming to the Wii. The closest we have gotten to a confirmation of a Wii version was way back in July, during an interview at E3 with Sega of America President, Simon Jeffery. At the event, Jeffery was casually quoted as saying that Resident Evil 5, “will happen on Wii.” He later tried to play off the comment as a simple slip of the tongue, but the damage had already done.

Since that point Nintendo fanboys, myself included, have been all frothy at the mouth, eagerly anticipating the games eventual Wii confirmation. Not only has this not happened, but Capcom has tried to distance themselves from all possible talk of the game, short of focusing on the upcoming PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release.

My heart was once again broken to read an interview that Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata recently conducted with CVG. During the interview, Kawata all but destroyed any hope of the game coming to the Wii when he was quoted as saying this about the game’s new most notable improvements:

First of all, and quite obviously, the graphics. Even the title screen of this couldn’t have been done on PS2 or Wii. Online co-op as well; the number of enemies you can have on-screen at one time; destructible scenery, physics – we’re using Havok this time. We can do more complex stuff with AI; the concern I had in the very beginning is that sometimes an AI partner can become very frustrating. Now she handles fine and you can play through the game without her becoming a frustration. When you see the new stuff you’ll say “Oh my God, I can do this and this and this,” but you’ll probably get used to it quite quickly and then get into the story.

So the game’s title screen wouldn’t even work on the Wii? Wow… That would pretty much put the dagger in the heart of anyone still holding out hope, but I’m still not completely convinced. Capcom does have a rich history of porting their games to every platform possible, so I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
