Trivial Impressions: A Look at BUZZ! Quiz TV

We have received our copy of BUZZ! Quiz TV and have already spent considerable time with the game in both solo and local multiplayer modes. What’s already apparent is that this game will appeal to a wide variety of players and situations. Whether you’re looking for a family or date activity or just looking to test your level of trivia knowledge on your own, BUZZ! Quiz TV looks to adequately fit the bill already– and that’s not even including the online multiplayer, which will be put through its paces before the final review goes up in a few days.

If you’ve played any of the BUZZ! games for the PlayStation 2, you’ll have an idea of what’s to come when playing this game. This is a trivia-driven game show where you compete for the highest score by answering questions in a variety of different subjects and sub-topics. Movies, music, sports, and general knowledge questions are all here– in fact, there are over 5,000 questions to test your mental mettle and a ton more available via the MyBUZZ! website in which users can create their own quizzes on a variety of topics.

The solo and local multiplayer games vary quite a bit. The solo game is all about speed and correct answers. Three segments await you per game, with six questions each. For each question, you must choose the correct answer by pressing the appropriately colored button on your buzzer. As the clock counts down for each question, points also bleed away until you answer. If your answer is correct, you win points based on how much time was left; if you answer incorrectly, you receive no points at all. In haste to save points, it can be easy to inadvertently select the wrong answer– even if you know what the right answer is– so it pays to tick an extra split-second to make sure you’re pressing the right button. Unfortunately, the single-player mode never deviates from this formula; when playing solo, you don’t get to see a lot of what BUZZ! Quiz TV really has to offer.

If you add a friend or three, however, BUZZ! expands into an even greater game. Six rounds of play exist here; some are based on speedily answering questions (like Short Fuse and Fastest Finger), while others focus more on just getting the answer right. Adding to the experience is liberal use of a multimedia library on the disc that’s quite impressive. Movie clips, music clips, and still pictures are all welcome changes from the standard “ask a question, give an answer” routine and the amount of media on the disc is rather impressive. Expect to hear some ribbing not only from your friends, but also from Buzz, the host of the show, during gameplay. The final round, appropriately named The Final Countdown, is perhaps the most tense of all of rounds in the game as each player tries to answer a barrage of questions correctly and accurately, all while a platform that each player stands on gradually descends to ground level. The last one in the air wins, but it’s not easy. This last round can see huge comebacks or blowout victories, but is almost always exciting.

BUZZ! Quiz TV sports online leaderboards for single-player games as well as impressive Trophy support. In order to unlock all of these Trophies– including a coveted Platinum Trophy– expect to play BUZZ! in a variety of ways. Single player, local multiplayer, and online action will all be required, plus you’ll need to be fast and accurate with your question-answering skill. Adding to the game’s replay value is the MyBUZZ! aspect, which literally contains thousands of new questions to be answered. You can even add quizzes yourself by going to the website and writing your own. Add upcoming expansion packs from Sony and you’ve got a game that likely will see consistent playing time in your PlayStation 3 for a long time to come.

Look for the final review of BUZZ! Quiz TV in a few days and find out what our final answer… errr… verdict is.
