(DS) Sonic + Bioware + Speed = Promising

We gotta admit, we have a soft spot for Sega’s mascot, that lovable and lightning quick hedgehog, Sonic. So when we heard that the next iteration of the popular franchise was heading to the Nintendo DS, well, you can imaging our girlish squeals of glee.

The franchise has been criticized in the last couple of versions, as long-time fans and newer players had issues with gameplay and camera issues, among other things. This new version, exclusive to the DS system, promises to please. Sega hired Bioware, the compnay responsible for such great games as Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire, to produce the latest handheld version of Sonic. The game was originally code-named Sonic RPG, so fans of BioWare and our little blue wonder should get ready for a fascinating and fun handheld game experience.

In addition to the ton of character and environment art in the gallery below, we’ve gotten our happy little glove-enfolded hands on a video in which the developers talk abou their affinity for the Sonic property, and the focus on story, RPG elements and speed. Speed, did you hear!? They also talk about game play, and how they approached creating the game. Take your time to listen through it. We might have just squee-ed in our pillows. Joy! Hit up the video and some artwork after the break.

Some video.
